Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to understand that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to fit into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.

Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Personal talent is important but England know from bitter experience that there is consequences when celebrity dominates. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He watched the national side book their place at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach mention loving the squad's spirit and principles. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals rather than teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham displays that aggression. You need that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone must support him and establish an environment which he can [have] this edge against rivals and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham took up most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches versus Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Well, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of coaching. He has not played for England since spring and has struggled to perform well this year but the boss was impressed by the player after how he played in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.

The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking multiple creators to the tournament be excessive? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.

It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. He is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this idea about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”

Tuchel conceded there are occasions when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is additionally so used to representing his club in a specific system, with a clear task. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager talked about Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options should Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.

Meanwhile, it is additionally a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires Bellingham committed but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an even better one.
