Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
Each of the three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was found soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location showed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the minister said.
Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The prosecutor thought the blast had occurred on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
