‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s road from injury table to success with the Basque club

Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in the UK, an teenage representing the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in the 2015 season, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against Sunderland following that, he netted. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, as well. “Actually,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; post-session, the short journey to Loiu and another trip to England, now to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a tough year for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in Europe. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary flanked by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in a long wait. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and debuting in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

He considered it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the first team but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his bow and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a turning point because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then go home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so do everything. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in that year, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, work, believe, and should the time come a vacancy arises in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. All the more so after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
