A Mountain of Japanese Animation News Arrived During the Festive Season

The winter break present a wealth of pursuits far superior than checking the updates: opening presents, indulging in festive fare, and employing patience techniques to not yelling at loved ones. Hopefully you managed to do all these things and more. However, the world of entertainment never sleeps, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. Many noteworthy announcements emerged over the break, and should you overlooked some of them, here is a summary of the juiciest bits.

The One-Punch Man Series Its Third Season Is Moving Forward (Come 2027)

Truly the most surprising announcement, the notorious troubled production that was season 3 of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to halt more episodes. Season 3 will be back with a subsequent part in 2027—so far away they easily could have dubbed it season 4. Adding to the surprise, the studio J.C. Staff will still be in charge. On a positive note this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the beginning, which might be a hopeful indicator. But, the main art for the second cour is the same image the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This leads one to believe that, by now, they must be teasing the fans.

The Ruri Dragon Series Is Set to Be the Premiere Shonen Jump Anime Produced By Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation has established a reputation for being an elite animation studio, making its mark not just for the superb artistry of its productions but for the fair treatment of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not produced an anime adapted from a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, arguably the best-known magazine in the business. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained widespread acclaim when it launched in 2022 after just a handful of installments, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the mangaka's health issues. When it resumed publication with a lighter schedule, the series demonstrated it hadn't lost the fans' affection and goodwill, and now fans are ecstatic about the impending KyoAni adaptation.

Kingdom Its Sixth Season Is Getting a Follow-Up In Production

Kingdom is the best-selling, epic Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English release, but the anime has been going on for years, and season 6 was another excellent entry. As it happens that was just the initial batch, because a "sequel" has been announced as in production, and it will almost certainly premiere in 2026.

Science Saru Is Adapting A Witch in Mongolia To Anime

A further studio famous for the superior craftsmanship of its projects, Science Saru has given us critically acclaimed works of the ilk of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the actual historical person of Fatima, an powerful woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a truly original and fascinating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will absolutely be on my must-watch list.

Tougen Anki Will Continue With a Second Season

Shortly after the conclusion of episode 24, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be securing a second season. Based on the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will delve into the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a specific premiere date has not yet been announced.
